Marsabit County Senator Mohamed Chute has raised alarm over the outbreak of kala-azar, also known as visceral leishmaniasis, in Marsabit County, calling for urgent government intervention to contain the disease.

Speaking in the Senate pursuant to Standing Order 53 (1), Senator Chute requested a statement from the Standing Committee on Health regarding the outbreak, emphasizing its severe public health risks.

"This outbreak has sparked serious public health concerns because kala-azar, if left untreated or not treated properly, causes severe organ damage and is fatal in over 95% of cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO)," Senator Chute stated.

In his request, the senator urged the committee to provide a detailed report on the outbreak, including the date of the first reported case, the total number of infections, and the most affected areas. He also called for information on the measures taken to control the spread of the disease, including medical supplies, equipment, and personnel deployed in response.

Additionally, Senator Chute inquired whether the Marsabit County Government had requested additional support from the National Government and if such requests had been fulfilled.

He also sought clarification on the budgetary allocations by both the National and County Governments to combat the outbreak, specifying whether the funds were part of previously approved budgets or allocated on an emergency basis.

The senator further called on the committee, led by Senator Jackson Mandago, to disclose any foreign donor support received for the response efforts and confirm whether plans were in place to conduct fumigation in affected areas, considered the most effective control measure.

The kala-azar outbreak has raised serious concerns among residents and health officials, with many calling for immediate intervention to prevent further loss of life. The Senate Committee on Health is expected to respond to Senator Chute’s request with a comprehensive plan to address the crisis.
