Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has sounded a tough warning to land rate defaulters, as the county intensifies revenue collection efforts ahead of the financial year close.
Speaking at the CBK Police Housing event in Industrial Area, Sakaja defended the ongoing clampdown on property owners who have failed to clear their dues, including the recent clamping of buildings.
He said it was unfair for struggling small traders like mama mboga to consistently pay daily dues, while wealthy estate owners continue to default on land rates, yet expect world-class services.
Sakaja stressed the need for shared responsibility, noting that Nairobi’s Ksh.40 billion budget cannot sustain its population of over 7 million, compared to Paris’s Ksh.132 billion for just 2 million residents.
He confirmed that no property owner will be spared in the crackdown, urging all to meet their obligations as the county scales up enforcement.
The county’s Receiver of Revenue, Tiras Njoroge, has also vowed to continue the intensified operations throughout June.
