President William Ruto’s administration has stepped up an ambitious road development programme across the Central Kenya region, releasing billions of shillings to revive stalled works, open new corridors, and upgrade rural roads that are crucial to local trade and daily movement.

From Nyeri to Kiambu, major construction is underway as the government moves to fulfil pledges of improved connectivity and economic uplift.

In Nyeri County, the President has committed a massive KSh 17 billion to revive twelve stalled projects covering about 464 kilometres.

A key beneficiary is the Mweiga–Amboni–Karandi and Endarasha–Charity–Watuka–Embaringo–Kimunyuru Road, a 66-kilometre stretch whose restoration had long been awaited by farmers and traders. Construction resumed after the government allocated KSh 2 billion, with completion expected by August 2026.

Earlier, on April 5, 2025, President Ruto released KSh 950 million specifically to restart and accelerate the works, signalling his administration’s intention to settle long-standing infrastructure gaps in the county.

In neighbouring Murang’a, the government has injected more than KSh 3.5 billion into road upgrades, focusing on improving access routes that support agriculture, trade and movement between rural villages and market centres.

Roads such as Ndikwe–Kiria and Mucunguca–Kiangage are now under active construction, bringing relief to communities that have struggled with inaccessible terrain, especially during the rainy season.

Kirinyaga County is also experiencing a major transformation. In 2025, the government set out to upgrade a 65-kilometre multi-constituency link-road network worth KSh 3 billion, aimed at boosting the region’s connectivity and opening up new economic zones.

In Ndia Constituency, work is progressing on the 54-kilometre Sagana–Kathaka–Thigùkù Road, a key route expected to ease transportation for thousands of residents. The government has further committed KSh 100 million to improve feeder roads in Kagio Town, supporting one of the region’s busiest trading hubs.

Nyandarua County, historically underserved in infrastructure, is also seeing significant progress. The government is upgrading 282 kilometres of rural roads to bitumen standard across seven major projects valued at KSh 11.4 billion.

These works add to four major roads — totalling 78 kilometres — completed between 2016 and 2024 at a cost of KSh 4.7 billion. In August 2023, President Ruto presided over the commissioning of a 50-kilometre stretch in Ndaragwa, valued at KSh 1.6 billion, with the upgrade expected to be completed in 18 months.

Additional works covering 27.5 kilometres in Ol Kalou Constituency continue to reshape access across the county, boosting agriculture and local mobility.

In Kiambu County, the government is undertaking both major highways and rural access roads. One of the standout projects is the upcoming dualing of the Pangani–Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road, a 23.5-kilometre section of the B32 corridor recently approved by the Cabinet.

Kiambu is also part of the expansive Rironi–Mau Summit highway corridor, a 175-kilometre project expected to be completed by June 2027 and set to significantly ease travel from Nairobi to the Rift Valley.

At the grassroots level, about 90 kilometres of rural and sub-county roads are being upgraded across Kiambu, Kiambaa and Limuru constituencies.

Progress has also been recorded on the Kamahendu–Gatamahio–Wangoi Road, one of the revived Mau Mau Roads in the county, where eight kilometres have already been completed and an additional four kilometres fully gravelled and ready for tarmacking as of February 2025.

Across Central Kenya, these developments reflect President Ruto’s broader agenda of revitalizing infrastructure to support economic activity, ease mobility, and connect farmers, businesses, and households to markets and essential services.

With major roads reopened, new corridors launched, and long-abandoned projects revived, the region is experiencing one of its most extensive periods of road construction in recent years — a transformation expected to redefine movement and opportunity for millions of residents.
