The Ministry of Health has revoked internship placements for 42 Bachelor of Science in Nursing students who were irregularly admitted into the 2025/2026 internship program before completing their studies.
The move follows revelations that ten universities both public and private unlawfully submitted names of unqualified students in violation of the Nursing Council Act and Public Service Commission (PSC) guidelines.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the Ministry confirmed that the affected students have been ordered to immediately vacate their duty stations as investigations begin.
The scandal has also led to the suspension of Dr. Lister Onsongo, CEO of the Nursing Council of Kenya, pending a full audit of the current cohort of 2,098 nursing interns. Ms. Ann Mukuna, Director of Standards and Compliance, has been appointed to take over the Council’s operations in an acting capacity.
Health officials say the probe is intended to protect the integrity of Kenya’s nursing profession and hold all responsible parties accountable.
“Whether the Ministry, the Council, or university level, those found culpable will face consequences,” the statement read.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to upholding professional standards, ensuring transparency in healthcare training, and safeguarding public trust.
