Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok has affirmed President William Ruto’s commitment to supporting the education sector.

Speaking on Friday, July 25, Bitok mentioned that for the first time in the history of Kenya, the government has allocated 702 billion to education, translating to 25% of the whole budget.

"The government is very keen on investing in education. For the first time in history, the government has allocated KSh 702 billion to education. That is 25% of the budget, the highest in the history of this country," said Bitok.

With the allocation, Bitok assured parents that the government does not intend to scrap free primary and day secondary school education as widely claimed.

The claim emerged as Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi admitted that the government was struggling to sustain the free primary and secondary education due to budget deficits.

However, Bitok said the Ministry of Education would lobby the National Assembly to increase the education budget to plug the deficit so the free education program can be sustained.
