President William Ruto has undertaken an initiative to modernise the South Nyanza (Sony) Sugar Company by adopting the Mumias Sugar recovery model.
President Ruto said that the government plans to revive Sony Sugar by placing the farmers at the heart of its operations.
“We are bringing in new management focused on making Sony efficient and farmer-driven,” said President Ruto during the groundbreaking for the Alara Nyambija Livestock Training Institute in Awendo.
The President said the new strategy will mirror the turnaround efforts in Mumias, aiming to restore the region’s sugar economy and increase returns for growers.
At the same event, he launched the construction of a livestock training institute set to enhance animal farming and capacity-building in Migori County.
“This institute will transform livestock farming in the region,” said President Ruto.
He also commissioned a new electricity project that will power more than 25,000 households, calling it a critical step in unlocking rural economic potential.
“Our agenda is simple — empower farmers, expand access to energy, and build a stronger rural economy,” added the President.
