The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has implicated several MPs in the planning, mobilising and financing of the violent anti-government protests witnessed in the country on June 25, 2024 and subsequent days.

After thorough investigations, DCI accused Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi alias Mejja Donk and Embakasi North’s James Mwangi Gakuya, among others, of planning the demos.

The investigation agency said the aforementioned MPs held several meetings at Hotel Boulevard in Nairobi to orchestrate the deadly demos that resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property.

During the investigations, the two MPs were summoned on July 31, and their statements were recorded.

DCI said efforts are being made to obtain all financial data from FRC, Safaricom and banks where financial transactions in support of the demos were carried out.

After investigations, DCI recommended Mejja Donk be charged with soliciting or inciting others to commit offence contrary to Section 391 of the Penal Code and money laundering contrary to sections 3, 4 and 7 of the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.

Further, the agency recommended Mejja Donk, Gakuya, George Theuri, Martin Deric Ngunjiri Wambugu and Pius G. Munene be charged with conspiracy to commit a felony contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code.
