The National Police Service (NPS) has clarified the presence of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja at President William Ruto’s political rally in Nyeri.
The move by Kanja to grace the rally and even address the attendees rattled a section of Kenyans, with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) terming it unconstitutional.
LSK president Faith Odhiambo said the move compromised the impartiality of the National Police Service, thereby violating constitutional principles.
However, in a retort, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said Kanja’s presence in the region was strictly for official duties.
"The IG's presence in Nyeri was strictly in line with his official duties, including oversight of security arrangements during the president's development tour, a core mandate of the NPS," said Nyaga.
He further said that the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU) is legally tasked with protecting the president under the direction of IG Kanja.
NPS reaffirmed IG Kanja’s unwavering commitment to constitutional impartiality in serving all Kenyans, devoid of political bias.
"At no time has the IG engaged in activities that could undermine the neutrality of his office," Nyaga added.
