The National Assembly has announced the suspension of its Thursday, October 3, 2024, session to make way for critical administrative arrangements aimed at facilitating comprehensive public participation in the ongoing impeachment process of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
This decision, led by Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, was made ahead of the scheduled debate on the Special Motion to Remove the Deputy President from Office.
The debate will officially begin on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 9 a.m. and is expected to continue until the motion is fully deliberated later that afternoon.
Kimani Ichung’wah stressed the importance of detailed public engagement, encouraging Members of Parliament (MPs) to promote grassroots involvement.
“We want to conduct granular public participation from polling stations, and I urge MPs to facilitate this,” he said during the announcement.
In line with Standing Order 30(3), the assembly has extended its Tuesday session to ensure the impeachment motion is thoroughly debated.
The structure of the debate allocates 60 minutes for the motion’s mover, followed by 30 minutes for the response.
Key figures, including the Majority Leader, Minority Leader, and the Seconder, will each have 10 minutes to speak, while all other MPs will be allowed five minutes to voice their positions on the issue.
A historic 291 out of 345 National Assembly members signed the impeachment motion, surpassing the 117-member threshold by a significant margin of 174.
The overwhelming support for the motion has exposed the vulnerability of Deputy President Gachagua, marking a pivotal moment in his political career.
Notably absent from the motion’s signatories was Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, a close ally of President William Ruto, whose silence throughout the process raised eyebrows.
Among the prominent figures backing the motion was Jubilee nominated MP Sabina Chege, who has recently been a vocal supporter of the Deputy President, making her shift in stance particularly noteworthy.
