Dadaab MP Farah Maalim has called for urgent security measures to protect the lives of 291 Members of Parliament and President William Ruto during a politically sensitive period.

His call follows the signing of a controversial motion by hundreds of MPs, which has heightened political tensions and sparked concerns for the safety of key political figures.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Maalim stressed the importance of safeguarding not only the lawmakers but also the political system itself.

He urged the Inspector General of Police (IG) to prioritize the security of President Ruto, warning of the serious consequences that could arise if the President’s safety were compromised during this volatile time.

“Not only do we have to protect the lives of 291 MPs who have appended their signature, but we must protect the system. The IG must protect our President. Our President must be protected until this motion is over because if, God forbid, anything were to happen, then we have something much bigger to worry about,” Maalim said.

The motion in question, which has triggered intense debate within the National Assembly, is being closely monitored by both lawmakers and the public as it moves through the legislative process.

MP Kimani Ichung’wah echoed Maalim’s sentiments, emphasizing the urgency of ensuring the safety of MPs in light of the rising tensions.

“The security of MPs is paramount. We have seen it on social media, we have been told by certain quarters that before March of 2025, they say bendera itapepea mlingoti nusu [the flag will fly at half-mast]. These are weighty issues. You must direct the IG of police, who was approved by this house less than a month ago, to ensure that when this house is sitting within the precincts of Parliament and even outside, including in committees, members are secured, and even in their homes they are secured,” Ichung’wah stated.
