Rising Nigerian star Ayra Starr is making waves on the global music stage after earning three major nominations at the 2025 BET Awards, the highest among African artists this year.
The chart-topping singer, known for her infectious hits like “Rush,” “Commas,” “Santa,” and “Ngozi,” has been recognised in three competitive categories: Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, and Best International Act. Her nominations reflect her growing influence and popularity not just in Africa but around the world.
Following closely behind is fellow Nigerian and Grammy-winning artist Tems, who received two nominations in the BET Her category for her soulful tracks “Hold On” and “Burning.” Tems is listed alongside some of the biggest names in global music, including Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Ariana Grande, and Doechii, who herself leads with six nominations in total.
The Best International Act category also features a strong lineup of African talent. Nominees include Burna Boy, Rema, Tyla, Black Sherif, Uncle Waffles, Abigail Chams (the sole East African on the list), Dlala Thukzin, Maglera Doe Boy, Shallipopi, and TxC, highlighting the rich diversity and creativity coming out of the continent.
Originally introduced in 2010, the BET Award for Best International Act: Africa was created to honour the achievements of African artists on a global scale. Though later merged with broader international categories, it remains a significant platform for African musicians to gain well-deserved recognition.
