Evans Kapkea will be officially sworn in as the new Deputy Governor of Uasin Gishu County following a gazettement by Governor Jonathan Bii.
Kapkea’s appointment comes after the resignation of former Deputy Governor John Barorot, who stepped down to take up a position as CEO of a global ICT company.
Governor Bii made the formal announcement after a court ruling on October 14, in which Eldoret High Court Presiding Judge, Justice Reuben Nyakundi, directed that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and Governor Bii gazette Kapkea as the new Deputy Governor.
The ruling followed legal action taken by the County Government to compel the IEBC to recognize Kapkea after his nomination and subsequent approval by the County Assembly.
The gazette notice, issued on October 22, officially appointed Kapkea to the position, in accordance with the constitutional powers conferred by Chapter Eleven of the Constitution of Kenya and the County Governments Act of 2012.
The notice read: “In exercise of the powers conferred under Chapter Eleven of the Constitution of Kenya, section 32D of the County Governments Act, 2012, and the Judgment of the High Court of Kenya at Eldoret in Constitutional Petition No. E24 of 2024: County Government of Uasin Gishu and 2 Others versus Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, I, Jonathan Bii Chelilim, the Governor of Uasin Gishu County, appoint Evans Kipruto Kapkea as the Deputy Governor of Uasin Gishu County.”
The swearing-in ceremony for Kapkea is expected to take place soon, with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki scheduled to grace the homecoming event at Kapkea’s Tembelio home in Uasin Gishu County.
