A cloud of grief and anger has settled over Huruma Estate in Nairobi after a young Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student was fatally shot during a chaotic police operation. The 21-year-old student, identified as Sheryl Adhiambo, was reportedly struck by a stray bullet on the evening of Saturday, February 7, as police pursued suspected criminals in the area.

According to residents, Sheryl had just completed her exams and was at home helping her mother at a small fish stall when the incident happened. What was meant to be a normal evening turned into a tragedy that has shaken her family, friends, and the wider community.

Her death sparked outrage among Huruma residents, who took to the streets in protest. Roads were blocked, fires were lit, and several vehicles and property were destroyed as residents accused police of using excessive force in a densely populated area. Businesses were forced to close, and security agencies later moved in to restore calm, leaving the estate tense and heavily patrolled.

Authorities say investigations are underway to establish the circumstances of the shooting. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has deployed a team to probe the incident and ensure accountability.
