Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has issued an apology to his Murang’a counterpart, Governor Irungu Kang’ata, over remarks he made during a burial ceremony in Laikipia over the weekend.
In a video seen on Tuesday, Kahiga clarified that his comments were taken out of context, stating that his intention was to urge Kang’ata to defend the interests of the Mt. Kenya region.
“The remarks I made about my friend Kang’ata were not meant to offend him. My point was simple—we must stand together to protect Mt. Kenya’s interests,” Kahiga explained.
The apology comes after Kahiga, on Monday, publicly challenged Kang’ata to take a stand on the future of Mt. Kenya politics, particularly regarding Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s bid to solidify his position as the region’s kingpin ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kahiga, while praising Kang’ata’s service delivery initiatives—such as the Kang’ata Care program—insisted that political alignment with Gachagua would be crucial for leaders seeking re-election.
“We urge Kang’ata to listen to the ground. Mt. Kenya will follow the direction of its chosen kingpin,” Kahiga stated.
At the same event, Kang’ata steered clear of political affiliations, instead emphasizing his focus on fulfilling campaign promises.
“When President Ruto and Gachagua came to Murang’a, they told me to focus on delivering services to my people and offering solutions to their challenges. That remains my stand,” Kang’ata affirmed.
