Members of Parliament have vowed to revoke regulations imposing additional costs on obtaining or replacing ID cards as well as birth and death registration documents.
The MPs led by Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkong’a, who chairs the National Assembly’s Legal Affairs Committee, cited issues of public participation and numerous errors in drafting the price hike regulations.
Chepkong’a communicated the MPs’ resolve to the Immigration Principal Secretary Julius Bitok.
The contentious Registration of Persons (Amendment) Regulations and the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Regulations, introduced by former Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, were published and enforced immediately.
The regulations saw a charge of KSh 300 for applying for new ID cards, up from the previous KSh 100.
Also, the rules suggest KSh 1000 be charged for duplicating or replacing an ID, altering ID details, obtaining identification reports and issuing civil servants’ cards and staff badges.
The regulation also proposes a KSh 1000 fee for registration or re-registration of births or deaths, an exercise that was previously free of charge.
