The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Arts rewarded the Kenya’s Under-20 national football team, Rising Stars, with Sh1.8 million for qualifying for the AFCON tournament.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen who hosted the team for a breakfast said the token was in line with the ministry’s recognition agenda.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the players, coach, FKF, technical staff, and fans for this outstanding achievement” Murkomen said.

The team finished as runners-up in U20 CECAFA qualifiers, securing ticket for the continental competition set to be held in South Africa next year.

Their victory was historic as it was the first junior team from Kenya to qualify for a continental tournament.

Football Kenya Federation Youth Committee Chairman Chris Amimo emphasized the importance of these structures, stating, “While you see the achievement now, the process began long ago.”

He urged Murkomen to enhance collaboration with the Kenya Academy of Sports and schools, suggesting that together they could create a talent pipeline capable of competing globally.

Notably, many players in the current U20 squad were part of the U18 team that won a silver medal at the 2023 CECAFA U18 Boys Championship, highlighting the effective development of talent within FKF’s youth programs.

This qualification is a significant milestone for youth football in Kenya, providing the Rising Stars with a valuable opportunity to compete on a continental stage and showcase their skills against Africa’s top teams.
