Several religious leaders from Kiambu County have called out the government for allegedly intimidating them, saying their churches are closely monitored nowadays.
The preachers said unidentified individuals have been attending church services and refuse to disclose their identities when asked, a move that has instilled fear among the congregants.
"Even they come and sit at the back, those people we don’t know, and when we ask them to state their names, they don’t respond. Later, they go outside and start asking those congregants, why did you call these guests?" one pastor narrated.
The men of God further claimed their area MPs make inquiries into what pastors preach and which guests attend their services, saying they feel the government has closed the doors of the church and determines who enters.
Also, the preachers claimed the police have been dispatched to check on preaching activities, a move they think is an attempt to suppress their ministry.
The pastors regretted supporting President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.
“We are saying we regret this because we are asking ourselves why we didn’t think that after doing what we did (endorsing Ruto for the presidency), there would be consequences, and we would be followed as if we had committed a sin. We knew we placed the president there because he is also a servant of God,” they added.
