Former Chief Justice David Maraga has vowed to transform Kenya’s political culture, promising to replace insults and personal attacks with issue-based leadership if elected president in 2027.

Speaking during an interview with K24 on Monday, Maraga acknowledged the tough road ahead but insisted that the cost of pursuing meaningful change is worth paying.

“This is a murky environment. People will do all manner of things, and in my view, that is the price we must pay to reset this country to where it is supposed to be. I am willing to pay it,” he stated.

Maraga described the presidency as the greatest honor Kenyans could grant him, pledging to restore integrity and servant leadership at the highest level of government.

“If I can succeed and reset this country, that would be the greatest privilege the Kenyan people would have given me. I promise Kenyans that I will not let them down,” he said.

The former CJ, who announced his intention to contest on July 16, 2025, said his decision was driven by concern over governance failures and the mistreatment of young people.

“Seeing our young people being treated the way they have been is extremely worrying. After discussions with friends and deep reflection, I thought it was time we rethink the leadership of this country. We cannot let some people throw our country to the dogs,” he added.

Maraga also committed to a politics of decency, vowing to avoid personal attacks during campaigns and instead focus on solutions to Kenya’s pressing challenges.

“Those attacks are often meant to cover someone’s weaknesses. Instead of focusing on what a leader can deliver, they are insulted. We want to change that so leaders understand they are serving the people,” he said.
