Eight traders have been arrested in Kyumbi, Machakos County, for being in possession of banned plastic bags, the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has confirmed.According to NEMA’s Eastern Region Administrative Officer, Patrick Lekenit, the suspects were found with over 1,000 illegal plastic bags during a two-day search operation along Mombasa Road.
They are currently being held at Kyumbi Police Station and are set to be arraigned at Mavoko Court.Plastic bags have been outlawed in Kenya since 2017 as part of the government’s efforts to curb environmental pollution. Despite the ban, some traders and manufacturers continue to produce and distribute the prohibited materials, posing a challenge to enforcement agencies.
Lekenit urged the public to support security agencies by providing information on individuals and businesses involved in the illegal manufacturing and distribution of plastic bags.
He emphasized that such cooperation is crucial in ensuring a cleaner and safer environment for all Kenyans.NEMA continues to intensify its crackdown on illegal plastic bags across the country, warning that those found in possession risk heavy fines or imprisonment as stipulated by law.
Kenya has been recognized globally for its strict plastic ban, which has significantly reduced plastic pollution. However, enforcement challenges remain, particularly due to the clandestine production and smuggling of plastic bags.
NEMA has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening surveillance and working with law enforcement agencies to uphold the ban. The agency has also called on traders to adopt environmentally friendly alternatives such as biodegradable bags and reusable packaging.
