The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has formally charged six men, including three police officers, with the murder of Albert Omondi Ojwang, who died in custody at Central Police Station earlier this month.

Appearing before Lady Justice Diana Kavedza at the Kibera High Court, the six accused Samson Kiprotich Talaam, James Mukhwana, Peter Kimani, John Ginge Gitau, Gin Ammitou Abwao, and Brian Mwaniki Njue were jointly charged with murdering Ojwang between the night of June 7 and 8, 2025. All pleaded not guilty.

Among those charged, Talaam served as the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Mukhwana was the daytime cell sentry, and Kimani the night shift cell sentry. Gitau, also a police officer, was detained at the station at the time, facing a separate murder probe.

The DPP opposed bail, citing potential interference with witnesses and investigations. The prosecution argued that the accused’s positions within the police service give them access to sensitive information, weapons, and internal systems that could jeopardize the case.

Further, the court was told that releasing the suspects could spark further public unrest, given the nationwide protests and outrage sparked by Ojwang’s death.

The DPP urged the court to deny bail under Article 49(1)(h) of the Constitution, describing the accused as flight risks and a threat to justice and public safety.

The bail ruling is expected in the coming days, as public attention remains fixed on the high-profile case under the banner #HakiNaUsawa (Justice and Equality).
