Nairobi Animal Orphanage

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has announced to relocate the Nairobi Animal Orphanage from Nairobi National Park to a 89-hectares of land opposite Bomas of Kenya.

The Nairobi Animal Orphanage being a home for injured, abandoned and rescued animals, ranging from the Big Five to birds and other species. However, KWS says the move is due to the increase in wild animals, as the location is too small and outdated to meet modern standards of animal’s welfare.

Speaking during a media briefing at KWS headquarters in Nairobi, Director General Erustus Kanga said, “The orphanage continues to serve as a vital center for wildlife conservation, education and rehabilitation, but the increasing demand for its services requires enhanced capacity.”

The new site will allow animals to live in an environments that is more closely mimic the wild, reducing stress and improving rehabilitation outcomes.

Established in 1964, the orphanage has been the gateway for Kenyans and international visitors to learn about wildlife conservation and rescuing animals from poachers, accidents and human wildlife conflict.
