Denis Itumbi , the Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination on Tuesday during a Discussion on NTV revealed that the government has initiated a plan to start collecting the musucians loyalties through E-citizen platform.
He said the to collect the loyalties using system will help to enhance transparency and improve the tracking of revenue to reduce disputes among the collective management organization (CMOs) and players in the sector.
“We have had criminal enterprises involved in the collection of music royalties in Kenya. We are correcting that by introducing payment of royalties through e-Citizen,” he said.
He added that E-Citizen will be collecting music royalties by the end of this month and will lead the way in distributing those royalties to musicians.
Acting MCSK CEO Richard Sereti defended the move not to share full amounts to artists noting that they sp[end some of the amounts in operations noting that they don’t receive government funding.
“We can’t distribute 70% of the revenue because we don’t get government support to collect royalties, hence spending more on operations,’he said.
