In a landmark step toward strengthening Kenya’s public health system and advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC), Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale has officially launched the Kenya National Public Health Institute (KNPHI).
The launch signifies a strategic move to centralize disease surveillance, promote preventive healthcare, and enhance the country’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies.
The KNPHI, established under Legal Notice No. 14 of 2022, will serve as Kenya’s national hub for public health intelligence, coordination, and emergency response.
It is designed to unify and streamline health functions previously spread across various institutions, thus eliminating duplication and improving efficiency in addressing both ongoing and emerging health threats.
Speaking at the launch event, Hon. Duale underscored the importance of building resilient health institutions that can anticipate, detect, and respond to crises swiftly.
He highlighted the institute’s role in supporting Kenya’s long-term health goals, especially within the framework of UHC, which prioritizes accessible, equitable, and quality healthcare for all.
“We are investing in a future-ready health system that is proactive rather than reactive,” said Duale. “The KNPHI will be our engine room for public health innovation and emergency preparedness.”
He also acknowledged the critical support of partners including the World Bank, Africa CDC, Amref Health Africa, and the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI), all of whom have provided financial and technical assistance during the institute’s operationalization phase.
World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo lauded Kenya’s commitment to strengthening health security and reiterated WHO’s support in ensuring KNPHI evolves into a globally connected and independent institute aligned with international standards.
The CS called on the Public Service Commission to expedite the approval of staffing structures and human resource tools necessary for the institute’s full-scale operation.
With KNPHI now officially launched, Kenya positions itself to better protect its population against future health crises while reinforcing the pillars of a sustainable and inclusive health system.
