Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday presided over the opening of the 22nd East African Magistrates and Judges Association (EAMJA) Annual Conference in Nairobi, calling for justice systems across the region to embrace modern, people-centered approaches to dispute resolution.
Held under the theme “Justice Beyond Brick and Mortar: Unlocking Multi-Door Pathways for People-Centered Justice in East Africa,” this year’s conference brings together judicial officers, legal scholars, and justice sector stakeholders from across the East African Community.
In his address, Deputy President Kindiki emphasized the need for East African judiciaries to move beyond traditional courtrooms and adopt innovative models that make justice more accessible, efficient, and responsive.
He noted that multi-door justice pathways—including mediation, arbitration, digital justice platforms, and community-based mechanisms—are essential in reducing case backlogs, enhancing trust in legal institutions, and ensuring timely justice for citizens.
Kindiki commended EAMJA for sustaining regional dialogue and cooperation among magistrates and judges, saying such forums strengthen the rule of law and support integration within the East African Community.
The DP also reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to supporting reforms that promote transitional justice, digital innovation, and the modernization of court infrastructure.
The annual EAMJA conference will run for several days, featuring panel discussions, judicial training sessions, and exchanges on emerging issues affecting the delivery of justice across the region.
