As part of preparations for the long rains planting season, the government has started distribution of subsidised fertiliser to farmers nationwide.
Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Ronoh flagged off a major consignment of fertiliser in Athi River, Machakos County, the PS said that the batch of fertiliser was headed to Western Kenya and the Rift Valley regions.
“Today I flagged off the delivery of 2M bags of fertilizer by train to Eldoret, Moi’s Bridge, Kitale, and surrounding regions, alongside over 200 trucks for last-mile distribution.”
He stressed that Kenya Railways has increased the number of cargo trains so as to quicken the movement of farm input to the targeted regions thus, farmers will be well equipped for the planting season.
Ronoh says farmers have already started selling their maize to the National Cereals and Produce Board boosting available stocks for milling.
According to PS Ronoh, 200 thousand bags of maize have been received from farmers, with an additional one million bags expected in coming weeks.
This is part of the government’s food security agenda to ensure farmers receive quality fertilizers on time ahead of the long rains. Already, more than 4 million bags have been distributed against the 6M bags required for the March 2026 planting season.
Going forward, Ronoh also cleared the air on maize supply and assured the public that the stocks already held by farmers and millers will be sufficient to meet consumer demand for the next six months. He further stated that the government is, therefore, reviewing the plan to import duty, free maize.
