Kenyans are invited to attend open days to view 4,888 completed housing units under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).
Led by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, the initiative seeks to address the country’s housing deficit by providing accessible homeownership opportunities. Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga encouraged potential homeowners to take advantage of the holiday season to visit 24 project sites across the country and explore the available housing options.
“These open days will offer an opportunity for Kenyans to directly engage with the programme and begin their journey to homeownership,” Hinga said. “We invite you all to visit the open days in Machakos and 23 other locations nationwide to view showhouses and see the various housing units nearing completion.”
In Machakos, the project includes 40 one-bedroom units, 60 two-bedroom units, and 60 three-bedroom units. Hinga highlighted that the development features expansive green spaces, ample parking for residents, and designs aimed at fostering a sense of community.
The government has made 4,888 units available for sale in different regions, offering various housing types to meet diverse needs.
“Plans are underway to expand the programme, with additional projects in advanced stages of development,” he said.
The open days provide an opportunity for Kenyans to inquire about the programme, get help with registration on the Boma Yangu portal, and learn about flexible payment options.
Hinga explained that the units can be purchased through instalments, a rent-to-own scheme with a tenure of up to 25 years, or a lump-sum payment.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to make affordable housing accessible to more citizens across the country.
An advertisement published on December 3, 2024, outlined the range of housing options available, including studio apartments and one- to three-bedroom units.
The projects cater to Kenyans in all income brackets. Social Housing targets individuals earning below Sh20,000, Affordable Housing serves those earning between Sh20,000 and Sh149,000, and Affordable Middle-Class Housing is available for individuals earning above Sh149,000.
Prospective buyers can visit the eCitizen portal at www.ecitizen.go.ke, navigate to the Boma Yangu tab, register for an account, and begin saving for their home deposit by making regular contributions to their Boma Yangu savings wallet.
