Kenya Railways announced on Thursday the temporary halt of commuter train services, impacting its scheduled routes.

In a notice issued on December 19, the transport company informed commuters that the suspension of commuter trains will take place from December 23, 2024, to January 5, 2025. “We wish to inform the public that commuter train services will be temporarily suspended from December 23, 2024, to January 5, 2025,” the statement read. The notice did not specify the reasons for the service interruption.

However, Kenya Railways assured that this suspension would not affect the weekly Safari trains to Nanyuki and Kisumu, which will continue as scheduled. “Please note that this temporary suspension will not impact the Standard Gauge Railway Link train or the weekly Safari trains to Nanyuki and Kisumu, which will operate as planned,” the notice confirmed.

Madaraka Express services on the SGR line will also remain unaffected and continue to run according to the usual timetable.

This announcement followed Kenya Railways’ earlier notification of two additional trips between Kisumu and Nairobi, scheduled to begin on January 15, 2025, to accommodate the increased travel demand during the Christmas holiday and school reopenings.

This is not the first instance of commuter train suspension. On November 25, 2024, Kenya Railways similarly announced a disruption of services between Nairobi CBD and Limuru, citing “unavoidable circumstances” without providing further details.
