Kenya commemorated World AIDS Day 2024 at Nyayo Stadium with a renewed pledge to eliminate HIV as a public health threat.

The event, led by Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah M. Barasa, emphasized the role of men and boys in combating stigma and promoting health-seeking behaviors.

“The fight against HIV is a collective effort, and men and boys must be champions for change,” Dr. Barasa said.

Kenya has made significant strides, with 98% of adults living with HIV on treatment and 97% achieving viral suppression by the end of 2023.

New infections have dropped by 83% over the past decade, and AIDS-related deaths by 64%. However, gaps remain in care for children, young people, and men.

Dr. Barasa highlighted the adoption of long-acting injectable cabotegravir for HIV prevention and Kenya’s strategic plan for a self-reliant HIV response by 2030.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage, ensuring equitable healthcare for all citizens.
