The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has successfully energized the 400kV Isinya–Konza transmission line and the 400/132/66kV Konza substation, marking a major milestone in strengthening Kenya’s national power grid and supporting the growth of Konza Technopolis.

In a press statement, KETRACO said the project significantly enhances grid reliability and improves the quality and stability of electricity supply to the lower eastern region, including the country’s flagship smart city, Konza Technopolis.

The project involves a 48-kilometre 400kV double-circuit transmission line and a high-capacity substation designed to improve power evacuation, distribution efficiency and overall system stability within the national grid.

According to the utility, the infrastructure is expected to strengthen electricity transmission capacity, enhance network flexibility and support the growing industrial, commercial and residential demand within Konza Technopolis and surrounding areas.

The development has been jointly financed by the Export-Import Bank of China and the Government of Kenya at a cost of approximately KSh 8.4 billion, as part of ongoing efforts to expand and modernize the country’s energy infrastructure.

KETRACO noted that the project was implemented with support from international contractors, with the aim of ensuring reliable power supply for current and future developments in the smart city ecosystem.

The utility added that the energization of the line is also expected to support Kenya’s broader development agenda by improving industrial competitiveness, attracting investment and enabling the integration of renewable energy sources into the national grid.

KETRACO further highlighted that the project will enhance power reliability across the region while ensuring long-term sustainability of electricity supply as demand continues to grow.
