Uhuru Agrees to Handover Jubilee Party Leadership
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has agreed to hand over the leadership of the Jubilee Party following a High Court ruling upholding provisions requiring retired presidents to transition from formal political party leadership.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the Office of the 4th President said Uhuru had taken note of the ruling by Justice Lawrence Mugambi, which upheld Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act.

The former President welcomed the decision, saying he had received it with profound respect for the judiciary and viewed it as an affirmation of Kenya’s democratic maturity.

The statement clarified that the long-delayed handover of the Jubilee Party chairmanship was not caused by reluctance on Uhuru’s part, but by an internal dispute that required legal clarification.

With the court providing guidance on the matter, Uhuru affirmed his willingness to ensure the handover is completed openly, lawfully and in accordance with the party’s constitution.

He also welcomed a new chapter for Jubilee, saying the party should be guided by the rule of law, its constitution and the next generation of leadership.
