Kenya finished third overall at the Africa Boxing Championships, which concluded yesterday in Kinshasa, DR Congo.
The Kenyan team’s impressive performance placed them just behind overall champions Morocco, who claimed 10 gold, eight silver, and three bronze medals, and the host nation DR Congo, which finished with nine gold, five silver, and seven bronze medals.
Senegal celebrated a notable achievement, winning its first gold medal in 26 years and finishing fourth with one gold, two silver, and four bronze medals.
Cameroon rounded out the top five with one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.
In the East African region, Kenya led the way, followed by Burundi in 11th place with one silver medal.
Ethiopia and Tanzania finished 14th and 15th, respectively, with three and one bronze medals.
Kenya’s standout moment came from Boniface Mogunde, who won the light-middleweight title, marking the country’s first gold medal in boxing in seven years.
Mogunde’s victory recalled Kenya’s last gold achievement when Nick Okoth claimed the lightweight title in 2017 in Congo Brazzaville.
Clinton Macharia added a silver medal in the Super Heavyweight division after a tough match against Morocco’s Younes Bouhdid.
Other contributors to Kenya’s medal tally included Amina Martha, Abednego Kyalo, Shaffi Bakari, Vincent Ochieng, and Robert Okaka, each of whom secured bronze medals after reaching the semi-finals.
