Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale met on Wednesday with the First Mayor of Gersthofen, H.E. Michael Worle, to discuss collaborative efforts for Gersthofen’s potential role in Kenya’s burgeoning carbon market.
The partnership aims to tap into international private-sector resources in carbon trading, a critical strategy to meet Kenya’s climate finance needs in combating the escalating effects of climate change.
The meeting follows Kenya’s recent legislative progress with the amended Climate Change Act, which has prompted the Ministry to finalize regulatory frameworks for carbon markets.
“Following last year’s passage of the amended Climate Change Act, the Ministry is finalising regulations to ensure that carbon markets respond Kenya’s development priorities as outlined in the BETA plan, 4th Medium Term Plan (MTP IV) and Kenya Vision 2030.” statement read.
These regulations align with national development priorities detailed in the BETA plan, the 4th Medium Term Plan (MTP IV), and the Kenya Vision 2030 blueprint.
Hon. Duale highlighted the importance of international partnerships in achieving climate goals and harnessing private sector participation.
Mayor Worle, accompanied by Baringo Central MP Hon. Joshua Kandie, expressed Gersthofen’s interest in supporting Kenya’s carbon market agenda through strategic investments, emphasizing the mutual benefits of sustainable development and climate resilience initiatives.
The collaboration marks a promising step forward in Kenya’s climate strategy, underscoring the government’s commitment to innovative solutions and international cooperation in addressing climate challenges.
