Kenya and Egypt are set to deepen their cooperation in the health sector following a high-level meeting between Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale and Egyptian Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Wael Nasreldin Attiya.

The bilateral talks, held in Nairobi today, build on momentum from President William Ruto’s recent State Visit to Egypt, during which health was identified as a priority area for strategic partnership.

The discussions centered on the implementation of three key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at bolstering health systems in both countries.

These include agreements on general health and medical services, collaboration between Kenyatta National Hospital and Egypt’s National Cancer Institute, and strengthening regulatory cooperation between the Egyptian Drug Authority and Kenya’s Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

“These frameworks will not only facilitate knowledge exchange and institutional partnerships but also provide technical support critical for the transformation of our healthcare systems,” said Hon. Duale.

Egypt’s Nile Development Fund also featured prominently in the meeting. Kenya was invited to submit proposals for three priority projects that could attract up to USD 6 million in financial support.

The fund targets development initiatives across Nile Basin countries, with health infrastructure and services identified as a core investment area.

Hon. Duale welcomed Egypt’s growing interest in supporting local manufacturing of health products and technologies in Kenya.

He noted that this aligns with Kenya’s push for self-reliance in the production of medical supplies and would enhance healthcare accessibility and resilience.

He also lauded Egypt’s technical expertise in infection prevention, disease outbreak management, and health research.

Ambassador Wael extended an invitation to Kenya to take part in the Africa Health Expo set for June 2025 in Egypt, which is expected to be a major platform for showcasing innovations and strengthening continental health partnerships.

The Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, and Director General for Health, Dr. Patrick Amoth.

The deepening of Kenya-Egypt health relations marks a significant step in promoting regional cooperation and shared goals in improving public health systems across Africa.
