To meet higher demand for specialised rehabilitation services, the government is considering increasing capacity at National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIRH) in Nairobi which serves not only the Kenyan population that require rehabilitation due to stroke, major surgery and other debilitating diseases but also East and Central African patients with similar conditions.
The Principal Secretary for the Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga visited the hospital in Kilimani to assess service delivery, review ongoing projects and identify priority areas requiring government support.
Through the visit, Dr Oluga inspected the clinical and rehabilitation departments, the physiotherapy service, and treatment rooms for diagnostics and therapy, as well as equipment installed under the National Equipment Service Programme.
In particular, the PS assesed how the equipment is being utilised to improve specialised patient care and commended healthcare workers for their dedication to patients.
He noted that NSIRH plays a remarkable in treating and rehabilitating people with spinal cord injuries from Kenya and the wider East and Central African region.
Oluga said there’s a need for more money to cover skills development, the purchase of modern technology, and the upgrading of the physical plant to ensure the provision of more and better rehabilitation services.
