Kenya and Azerbaijan have taken a major step toward enhancing diplomatic relations with the signing of a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Bilateral Political Consultations.
The agreement is expected to pave the way for stronger future engagements between the two nations.
The signing took place on the margins of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) following discussions between Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Azerbaijan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Jeyhun Bayramov.
Their dialogue centered on boosting bilateral cooperation and exploring mutual opportunities, particularly in preparation for the upcoming COP 29 climate summit, which Azerbaijan will host.
“I commended Azerbaijan’s commitment to environmental sustainability and expressed Kenya’s eagerness to collaborate more closely on climate action,” Mudavadi said, adding that Kenya remains firmly dedicated to addressing global climate challenges. He highlighted Kenya’s leadership in hosting the African Climate Summit (ACS) in 2023 and its ongoing efforts to promote green energy and sustainable development.
The MoU underscores both nations’ desire to deepen their political and economic ties while working together on pressing global issues like climate change.
“We look forward to working with Azerbaijan to ensure COP 29 achieves meaningful progress, particularly on key issues such as climate financing, addressing loss and damage, and energy transition,” Mudavadi emphasized.
