The Kenya Defence Forces has been deployed across Nairobi to support search-and-rescue operations after heavy rains left a trail of destruction, submerging homes and displacing hundreds of families.
Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Onsumba confirmed the deployment, saying military teams had been called in to reinforce ongoing emergency efforts as the situation escalates.
Earlier warnings from the Kenya Meteorological Department had flagged a high flood risk in low-lying areas, a forecast now playing out across several regions.
The rains have already turned deadly. At least three people are feared to have been swept away in Nairobi following intense downpours earlier in the week.
Infrastructure has also taken a hit, with the Kenya National Highways Authority briefly closing the Iten–Kabarnet road after a landslide before restoring access.
This marks the second deployment of the military in recent weeks, underscoring the severity of the ongoing rains. In March, President William Ruto ordered a similar multi-agency response as flooding hit several parts of the country.
With forecasts indicating continued rainfall, authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to move to safer ground as emergency teams remain on high alert.
