Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome has urged political leaders to refrain from politicizing government projects, particularly the Affordable Housing Programme, which she said is critical to improving the lives of ordinary Kenyans.
Speaking during the official handover of Wiyumiririe and Marmanet Markets in Laikipia County, Wahome dismissed what she described as “cheap politics” propagated by some politicians, warning them against efforts to undermine the government’s housing agenda.“The Affordable Housing Programme is not about politics — it is about delivering dignity and economic opportunities to our people,” said Wahome. “Let us allow development to take precedence over political interests.”
The CS emphasized that the housing programme, one of President William Ruto’s key development priorities, is set to deliver up to one million housing units by 2027. She described it as a transformative initiative aimed at addressing Kenya’s housing deficit while creating jobs and stimulating local economies.
At the Laikipia event, Wahome also highlighted the benefits of the newly launched markets, which are expected to serve more than 300 traders. The facilities boast modern amenities including smart stalls, cold and dry storage areas, an ICT hub, food courts, and sanitation blocks — a move aimed at boosting local trade and improving the business environment for small-scale traders.
The handover comes just a day after President Ruto commissioned 1,080 completed housing units in Nairobi’s Mukuru area, marking another milestone in the ongoing rollout of the Affordable Housing Programme.
Wahome reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that development projects continue unhindered, urging all leaders to support rather than sabotage initiatives that are designed to benefit the public.
