Late Raila Odinga.

The state reception for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday turned chaotic as thousands of supporters overwhelmed security personnel in a show of emotion and defiance.

President William Ruto, who was expected to lead the official reception, was reportedly unable to access the reception area after the situation got out of control. The massive crowd, waving flags and chanting Raila’s name, surged past security barriers as the plane carrying his body touched down.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and several top government officials were also present but could not be clearly seen amid the commotion that ensued.

Military personnel and police struggled to maintain order as supporters surrounded Raila’s casket, momentarily halting the planned ceremonial proceedings.

Attempts by Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo and other leaders to appeal for calm were futile as mourners continued to mill around the casket, chanting liberation songs and calling Raila a “hero of democracy.”

The incident has raised fresh concerns about crowd management at state functions, particularly those involving emotionally charged national figures.

Government officials said the situation was later brought under control, and the casket was escorted under heavy security to Lee Funeral Home, where it will remain ahead of the state funeral preparations.
