ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo on Tuesday led a tree planting exercise at King’wal Swamp in Nandi County, where thousands of seedlings are expected to be planted.
The tree planting exercise themed “Grow Trees, Conserve King’wal Swamp and Save Siatung’a” targets to plant 20,000 tree seedlings within the 54 hectares Swamp. The exercise is part of efforts to restore the wetland and protect wildlife, including the rare sitatung’a antelope found in the area.
The event was organised by the Ministry of ICT, the ICT Authority, the Nandi County Government and the local community, under the leadership of County Commissioner Wilberforce Kilonzo.
Speaking while officiating the ceremony, CS Kabogo noted that the exercise directly contributes to the national ambition noting that the Ministry recognises environmental conservation and stability as part of the Digital Transformation Agenda.
“Today is not just about putting trees in the ground. It is about bringing life back to this area and protecting what we have for the future,” he said.
The Cabinet Secretary commended the county government leadership for bringing together government, agencies, and the community in this noble cause adding that the success of the initiative lies in community ownership.
“Let us keep working together in planting trees, creating ecosystems, and making Kenya a sustainable place,” added CS Kabogo.CS In Charge of ICT Leads in Planting 20,000 Tree Seedlings in Nandi County
CS Kabogo also congratulated the county’s administration and residents on coming up with an idea to plant the trees, stressing that it was only through teamwork that success could be achieved.
Kabogo asked residents to nurture the planted seedlings, explaining that their true test started after the planting.
The government is still calling on many other communities across the nation to plant trees as part of its efforts towards environmental conservation and sustainable development.
