The 39th President of the United States of America, James Earl Carter Jr., is dead.

Popularly known as Jimmy Carter, the former president breathed his last on Sunday, December 29, at his home in Plains, Georgia while surrounded by his family.

Carter, famed for his tireless advocacy for peace and human rights, died aged 100 years.

Taking to social media, President William Ruto mourned Carter as an extraordinary leader whose dedication to public service was epic.

"He was a powerful champion for global peace and human rights. We are indebted to his pioneering voice on the actions for a healthy planet that has protected our nature and slowed climate change. Our thoughts and prayers are with President Carter’s family and the people of the United States of America," said President Ruto.
