Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson bid has received a significant boost after Ghana’s President-Elect John Mahama declared his support for him.

Mahama endorsed Raila during a meeting with President William Ruto in Kilgoris on Sunday, December 29, in which the ODM leader was in attendance.

During the meeting, Ruto and Mahama held extensive discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between Kenya and Ghana.

"Kenya will enhance her relations with Ghana to include more sectors in trade and investment, agriculture, mining, tourism, oil and gas. This will broaden opportunities for the people of the two countries and ensure our shared prosperity," said Ruto after the meeting.

In the elections slated for February 2025, Raila will face off against his top rival, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato.

President Ruto has been instrumental in Raila’s campaigns, repetitively imploring African presidents to rally behind the Azimio leader during his foreign trips.
