Kenya is ready to co-host the 2025 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in August after the government paid Ksh1.6 billion in hosting fees to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Sports and Culture Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed before the Departmental Committee that the State Department for Sports has completed the payment.

Mvurya further highlighted that the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports is committed to building 37 sports academies across the country. So far, agreements have been signed with 27 contractors, who are set to begin work on various sites in April 2025.

CHAN, which is scheduled to run from August 2 to 30, will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The tournament, focused on locally-based players, was awarded to the three East African nations as part of their preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

On the country’s readiness for CHAN, Mvurya assured that the construction of all necessary sports infrastructure is progressing, noting that significant efforts have been made to resolve challenges around stadiums. “I personally have a weekly schedule to visit our stadia,” Mvurya told the committee.

The Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums have been selected to host CHAN matches and are currently undergoing renovations to meet the event’s requirements.
