The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has vigorously come out to refute a malicious press release making the rounds on social media that claimed the Commission was planning to dissolve Parliament.
The false statement, titled “Dissolution of Parliament”, was made to look like an official message from IEBC using their logo and format but the Commission says it’s completely fake.
“We want to make it clear this document did not come from IEBC. It is not true at all, and Kenyans should ignore it,” the Commission said in a public statement on Wednesday.
IEBC added that it is now looking into where the fake message came from and will take legal action against those who made or shared it.
The Commission warned that spreading false information like this is not just misleading it also puts the country’s democracy and peace at risk.
“Such fake news is meant to confuse people and weaken the trust that Kenyans have in the election process,” IEBC said. “This must stop.”
The Commission requested Kenyans to always check any information regarding IEBC by verifying through its official channels like verified social media, email, phone, or by visiting any of the IEBC offices.
IEBC also informed Kenyans that it is committed to its role of protecting Kenya’s democracy and conduct free, fair, and transparent elections.
“We are committed to serving Kenyans and ensure the elections are free and fair,” the statement added.
