Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen today visited Baringo County to evaluate the security situation and assess the progress of Operation Maliza Uhalifu in the North Rift region.

The operation, aimed at combating banditry and restoring peace, has been a key government initiative to curb cattle rustling and improve security in pastoralist communities.

During the visit, CS Murkomen expressed satisfaction with the progress made in addressing insecurity, particularly the ongoing efforts to dismantle the cattle rustling networks that have long plagued the region.

He commended the multi-agency security teams, including specialized police units, for their relentless efforts in restoring order.”The government remains fully committed to supporting security forces through resource mobilization and the integration of modern technology to combat banditry effectively,” Murkomen stated.While acknowledging that sporadic insecurity incidents still occur, the CS was encouraged by the reopening of schools and the general sense of calm returning to the affected areas.

He emphasized that the government’s measures are yielding positive results, with communities gradually resuming their normal lives. Murkomen also called on local leaders to play an active role in peacebuilding, urging them to preach unity and avoid divisive politics.

He stressed the importance of strengthening community policing structures to ensure long-term security and peaceful coexistence among different groups.Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who accompanied the CS, applauded the dedication of security officers stationed in the North Rift.

He noted that their efforts have led to the reopening of more schools, the resettlement of displaced families, and a revival of farming and economic activities in the region.

Other officials present included Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police Gilbert Masengeli, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Abdi Hassan, GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodoni, Anti-Stock Theft Unit Commandant Joseph Limo, Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati, Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, and the PA to the IG James Murithi.

As part of the government’s broader security strategy, Murkomen announced plans to extend Operation Maliza Uhalifu to Laikipia, Samburu, Meru, and Isiolo counties, with a new security base set to be established in Kirimon, Laikipia North.
