Socialite and entrepreneur Huddah Monroe has caused a stir online after she strongly castigated Kenyan security firms for deploying female employees on night shifts.
In her Instagram stories, Huddah questioned the logic behind placing mothers on night-time duty, arguing that such working hours disrupt crucial parenting roles, especially in cases when children need their mothers at night.
“Kenyan security companies that give women night shift, are y’all normal?” she wrote, clearly baffled by the practice. She then continued with, “Who sleeps with their kids at night?” to point out the emotional and practical challenges for women when they are forced to work away from home during the night hours.
Huddah noted that many companies do not consider the effect such schedules have on families, especially young children who heavily depend on their mothers. She emphasized the importance of night time in child-parent bonding and asked whether employment systems truly support women’s wellbeing.
Her posts stirred mixed reactions online. Some netizens agree with her and further argue that women, especially mothers, should be shielded from night work because of safety concerns and responsibilities towards children. Others, however, noticed that economic hardships make many women accept any shift available, and thus the problem is more about labor rights rather than about gender.
