Carl Rinsch, the director of 47 Ronin, has been accused of embezzling $11 million from Netflix. The filmmaker, known for his previous work with Keanu Reeves, was hired by the streaming giant to create a science-fiction series, but instead, federal authorities say he misused the funds for lavish personal expenditures.

Rinsch is facing serious charges of wire fraud and money laundering, as detailed in an indictment unsealed earlier this week in New York. The 47-year-old was arrested shortly after the documents were made public. If found guilty, he could face decades in prison.

According to federal prosecutors, Rinsch took more than $11 million that was meant for the production of his planned series and used it for personal gains. The show, originally titled White Horse and later renamed Conquest, was centered around a scientist who creates powerful clones that are cast out to a Brazilian city, where they develop advanced technology and clash with humans. Netflix had initially paid Rinsch $44 million to create a full season of episodes based on a pitch that included six short episodes.

Rinsch reportedly requested additional funding from Netflix to complete the project. However, instead of using the money for its intended purpose, he allegedly transferred the funds to personal accounts and indulged in buying expensive items. These included luxury cars like Ferraris and Rolls-Royces, high-end clothing, and furniture, as well as investing in cryptocurrency. He also used the money to cover legal fees for his divorce and lawsuits against Netflix.

The FBI has made it clear that they will not tolerate such actions, sending a strong message to individuals who seek to defraud companies. Investigations into Rinsch’s financial activities are ongoing.
