When the 50 Most Influential African Women in Sports (50MIA) Awards and Summit convenes in Dakar, Senegal, from November 5–7, 2026, it will represent far more than a glittering gala night.

Positioned alongside the historic Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026—the first Olympic event ever hosted on African soil—the summit is designed to be a definitive turning point for sports governance, commercial investment, and gender equity across the continent.

At the helm of this ambitious continental project is Wairimu Nyathira, the Project Lead. A seasoned sports media strategist and advocate for structural reform, Nyathira views the upcoming Dakar summit as a prime opportunity to build institutional equity and achieve “narrative sovereignty”—the principle that Africa must own and professionalise the stories of its own athletes.

“For too long, the brilliant achievements of African women in sport have been treated as isolated moments of individual triumph,” Nyathira notes. “Through the 50MIA framework, we are building a permanent ecosystem that links elite performance with commercial acumen, policy reform, and systemic safeguarding.”

A Powerhouse Coalition: Local, Continental, and Global

Executing a vision of this scale requires a multi-layered infrastructure. ASVG has successfully orchestrated a formidable trio of strategic partnerships that anchor the project locally, continentally, and globally.

On the ground, ASVG has formalised a landmark agreement naming Senegal-based empowerment organisation SENEGEL as the Exclusive Local Host Partner.

This partnership ensures the summit is deeply embedded within the local economic fabric, driving small-to-medium enterprise (SME) participation so that the financial benefits of global sports events ripple down to local, women-led businesses and youth changemakers.

Continentally, the momentum is reinforced by the vital renewal of ASVG’s strategic alliance with the Women Sports Africa Network (WSAN). As long-standing champions of female sports development across the region, WSAN’s continued partnership is central to shaping the summit’s core capacity-building frameworks, bringing immense regional expertise in athlete advocacy and structural equity.

Elevating the initiative onto the world stage is a historic global partnership with the G100: Group of 100 Global Women Leaders.

Formally designated as the Official Global Partner, G100 brings an expansive international network of female innovators, policymakers, and He-for-She champions.

This global alliance ensures high-level policy dialogue and provides the international media amplification necessary to position Dakar as a global hub for sports diplomacy.

Restructuring the Athlete Pathway

50MIA has steadily expanded its mandate beyond annual acknowledgements. Powered by the collective strengths of WSAN, SENEGEL, and G100, the 2026 curriculum introduces critical, real-world modules directly into the summit’s high-level forums, including:

  • Financial Empowerment: Practical literacy frameworks designed to safeguard female athletes against exploitation and build sustainable, post-career wealth.
  • Safeguarding and Welfare: Developing robust institutional policies to protect women and girls at all levels of continental sports federations.
  • Entrepreneurship & Innovation: Transition pathways that help retiring athletes channel their unique leadership skill sets into commercial and agricultural enterprises.
  • Sports Tech
  • Mentorship

By shifting the focus from simple visibility to institutional backing, Nyathira and her network of partners are constructing an enduring blueprint for the African sports industry. As the “Road to Dakar” campaign gathers momentum, the collaboration between ASVG, SENEGEL, WSAN, and G100 signals a profound change: African women in sport are no longer just participating in the game—they are rewriting the playbook.
