The government has marked a major milestone in Kenya’s shift to cleaner energy with the official launch of the Lean Energy Biomass Boiler Plant at Unga (EA) Farmcare Company.

Principal Secretary for Energy, Alex Wachira, described the project as a key step in replacing diesel-based steam generation with locally sourced biomass fuel, a move that reduces carbon emissions while creating employment opportunities for youth and generating additional income for farmers and transporters.

“This landmark project demonstrates how industrial energy can be both sustainable and economically beneficial,” said Wachira. “Our policy framework encourages the adoption of alternative energy technologies that are affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly, especially within manufacturing and industrial sectors.”

The PS emphasized that the government will continue to support initiatives that promote sustainable energy, urging companies to adopt technologies that lower operational costs, strengthen competitiveness, and enhance resilience in the long term.

The biomass boiler plant is expected to serve as a model for other industries looking to transition from fossil fuels to cleaner, locally available energy sources, contributing to Kenya’s broader climate and industrial goals.
