Tragedy struck on Monday morning along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway after a grisly head-on collision between a 14-seater matatu and a canter lorry claimed the lives of three people, leaving several others with serious injuries.

Confirming the incident, Limuru Sub-county Police Commander Mary Gachie said the accident occurred near the Limuru area, a location that has now been marked as a black spot due to a rising number of fatal crashes.

The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals as emergency responders worked to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow.

Commander Gachie urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic rules to prevent such tragic occurrences. “Speeding and reckless driving continue to cost innocent lives. We are calling on drivers to be vigilant and responsible while on the road,” she said.

Eyewitnesses at the scene attributed the crash to speeding, with some calling on the government to erect speed bumps along the stretch to help curb overspeeding. The area had already recorded another fatal accident just last week, in which five lives were lost.

As investigations continue, authorities are now considering additional safety measures to address the alarming rise in road accidents on this notorious stretch.
