The High Court will today issue fresh directions on the case where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is challenging his impeachment.

A three-judge bench comprising Justices Eric Ogola, Freda Mugambi, and Antony Mrima is also expected to set a hearing date for all consolidated petitions related to the matter.

Gachagua’s impeachment came after months of political tensions and internal power struggles within the government. His fallout with President William Ruto saw him increasingly sidelined, culminating in a dramatic ouster backed by Members of Parliament allied to the ruling administration.

The impeachment motion against him cited gross misconduct, abuse of office, and failure to foster national unity.

His critics accused him of advancing divisive politics, particularly in his push for Mount Kenya’s dominance in government affairs. Others alleged corruption and misuse of office, claims that Gachagua strongly denied.

Despite his efforts to consolidate support, he suffered a significant political blow when key figures from the Mount Kenya region distanced themselves from him.

A decisive parliamentary vote sealed his fate, marking an unprecedented removal of a deputy president from office.

Following his impeachment, Gachagua swiftly moved to court, terming the process unconstitutional and politically motivated. He argued that due process was not followed and that his removal was orchestrated to eliminate him from the 2027 political landscape.
